From Middle Breton reiff, Proto-Brythonic *rroɣid (compare Cornish ry (to give), Welsh rhoi (to give)), from Proto-Celtic *rogīti (to extend forward) (compare Old Irish rogaid (to extend)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃roǵéyeti (to straighten).
