Inherited from Old Catalan renyó~ronyó, from Vulgar Latin *rōniōnem~*rēniōnem, derived from Latin rēn, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰren- (an internal part of the body). Compare Occitan renhon, ronhon; French rognon, Spanish riñón.
