Dutch[edit]
Pronunciation[edit]
Etymology 1[edit]
From Middle Dutch ruchte, rochte. An early derivation from the root of roepen (“to call, shout”) with a dental suffix; the sound change -pt- to -ft- is primitive (Primärberührung; compare bruiloft), and -ft- subsequently yielded -cht- through regular Dutch sound change (compare gracht).
