From sadınmak (to cognize) +‎ -ım, from Proto-Turkic *saď- (to think, to consider, to accredit), from *sa- (to think).

Cognate with Karakhanid [script needed] (sa-, to count, consider, suppose), Azerbaijani saymaq (to count, consider), Chuvash сума (suma, to count, consider, honor, respect, read), Turkmen saýmak (to think, assume, suppose, consider), Yakut аах (aaq, to read, count, consider).
