Borrowed from French sémiotique, from Ancient Greek σημειωτικός (sēmeiōtikós, fitted for marking, portending), from σημειῶ (sēmeiô, to mark, interpret as a portend), from σημεῖον (sēmeîon, a mark, sign, token), from σῆμα (sêma, mark, sign).
