Borrowed from French sémiotique, from Ancient Greek σημειωτικός (sēmeiōtikós, “fitted for marking, portending”), from σημειῶ (sēmeiô, “to mark, interpret as a portend”), from σημεῖον (sēmeîon, “a mark, sign, token”), from σῆμα (sêma, “mark, sign”).
