From Old Swedish snøþer, from Old Norse snauðr, from Proto-Germanic *snauþuz, from Proto-Indo-European *ksnew-. Cognate of German schnöde, Dutch snood, Old English besnyþþan, Latin novacula. Doublet of snygg and snaggad.
