[edit]From Middle Low German sniddeker, derived from the verb sniddeken, snidken (“to carve”), a variant of the verb snīden (“to cut”), from Proto-Germanic *snīþaną. Norwegian snekker and Swedish snickare are also borrowed from Low German.
