Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese sobrancelha, sobrencelha, from Latin supercilia, plural of supercilium (“eyebrow”), from super (“above”) + cilium (“eyelid”). Doublet of supercílio. A nasal infix developed in Portuguese, as with Romansch survantscheglia; cf. also Romanian sprânceană.
