Danish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Middle Low German spek, form Proto-Germanic *spiką, cognate with German Speck (bacon), English speck (fat), Old Norse spik. The geminate consonant of Danish spæk(k-), Norwegian spekk and Swedish späck points to a Low German origin (the Old Norse form would have resulted in Danish *speg).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /spɛk/, [ˈsb̥ɛɡ̊]

Noun[edit]

spæk n (singular definite spækket, not used in plural form)

  1. blubber (of a whale or a seal)
  2. fat (of a pig)
