Etymology[edit]

From Old Norse stofna, from Old Norse stofn (stem, shoot, offspring), from Proto-Germanic *stōmną (offshoot, stem), probably from *stōmô (basis, matter). Cognate with Icelandic stofna (to establish), Old English stofn (sapling, sprout, shoot, twig).
