- (ichthyology) Relating to the order Syngnathiformes (sometimes suborder Syngnathoidei or Syngnathi) of pipefishes and close relatives.

- This will not appear utterly incredible, if we reflect that the males of syngnathous fishes receive the eggs of the females in their pouches , hatch them, and afterward nourish the young.
