[edit]From alteration of Old Spanish sótalo, from Vulgar Latin *subtulum, from Latin subtus.[1] Compare Portuguese sótão (“attic”). Less likely from a Vulgar Latin *subtanus (whence Italian sottano), itself also a derivative of subtus (“below”).
