     Sang 1933, Phan Khôi xác định cụ thể hơn những phẩm chất của “gái tân thời”: Gái tân thời “ngoài sự ăn mặc mới, trang sức mới, “phải có học thức mới, tư tưởng mới, giỏi ra nữa phải có cách sinh hoạt mới”, và những cái mới đó, “phải từ trong đầu mới ra”.
     Theo ông “tân thời” dịch từ “moderne” trong tiếng Pháp, nghĩa nó là “điều gì hợp với cái thời mình đương ở”.

     Later in 1933, Phan Khôi identified the traits of "modern women": "apart from a new way of dressing and accessorizing, they ought to possess new knowledge and a new mode of thought, and even better, a new mode of living", and all these new things "must be integrated into their minds."
     He claimed "modern" was a translation from the French word moderne, which means "that which is appropriate for the current time."
