Etymology[edit]
Compound of tangga (“stair”) + berjalan (“walking”). Compare to Cantonese 行人電梯/行人电梯 (hang4 jan4 din6 tai1, “escalator”, literally “pedestrian electric ladder”), Italian scala mobile.
