Maltese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Arabic تَوْأَم (tawʔam). The expected form would be *tewwem. The form tewmi is either a backformation from the plural or derives from an adjective; compare Arabic تَوْأَمِيّ (tawʔamiyy).

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

tewmi m (plural tewmin, feminine tewmija)

  1. a twin

Usage notes[edit]

  • Generally not used with personal suffixes. For “his twin”, one says ħuh it-tewmi.
