Etymology[edit]

Sino-Vietnamese word from 太陽, composed of (great) and (yang).

This short compound with the meaning "temple" is shared with many southern Sinitic lects, while other lects use different terms or a longer compound, cf. Mandarin 太陽穴太阳穴.
