Vietnamese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (SV: thố). Compare Old Khmer ថោះ (thoḥ), ថះ (thaḥ, rabbit (zodiac)), Thai เถาะ (tɔ̀).

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

(classifier con) thỏ (, , 𤟛)

  1. a leporid
  2. (poetic) Ellipsis of Thỏ Ngọc (the Jade Hare).

Usage notes[edit]

Rabbits and hares/jackrabbits are not distinguished. While in Japan and Korea, similar words more likely refer to native hares, in China and Southeast Asia, rabbits and hares are both found and they're both referred to by the same words. Compare chuột (murid).
