Learned borrowing from New Latin thyreoīdēs, itself borrowed from Ancient Greek θῠρεοειδής (thureoeidḗs, shield-shaped), from θῠρεός (thureós, oblong shield) +‎ -ειδής (-eidḗs, -form, -like).
