Etymology [edit]
From Yiddish תּחת (tokhes, “buttocks”), in turn from Hebrew תחת (tákat, “buttocks”).
Pronunciation [edit]
Note: In most dialects of English, speakers are uncomfortable with the phoneme /x/ and it is commonly substituted here with /k/ or the more etymologically conservative /χ/.
