From Latin trāditiōnem, accusative of trāditiō (a giving up, handing over, surrender, delivery, tradition), from trādō (give up, hand over, deliver over, betray, verb), from trāns- (over, across) +‎ (give) (from Proto-Indo-European *deh₃- (to give)). Cognate with Old Spanish trayçon.
