Borrowed from Latin trophaeum (sign of victory, monument), tropaeum, from Ancient Greek τρόπαιον (trópaion, monument of an enemy's defeat), from neuter of τροπαῖος (tropaîos, of defeat), from τροπή (tropḗ, rout, turning of an enemy).
