Maltese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Sicilian pitrusinu, from Latin petroselinum, from Ancient Greek πετροσέλῑνον (petrosélīnon). Probably an early borrowing in which the initial pi- was interpreted as the preposition bi (with), thus Maltese bit-tursin (with parsley), whence the backformation.
