twin + tail. The "pigtail" sense is a calque of Japanese ツインテール (tsuintēru).
twintail (plural twintails)
- A variety of goldfish with the tail divided into two parts.
- (fandom slang, chiefly Japanese fiction) Either of a pair of pigtails in the hair.
