Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from 宇宙, composed of 宇 (“eaves; space”) and 宙 (“beams; time”), from Literary Chinese 宇宙 (yǔzhòu, “eaves and beams; space and time; heaven and earth; the world”). Perhaps the idea was that eaves form an enclosure, a "space"; while beams are more linear and representative of time, although Literary Chinese 宙 (zhòu) was also used for "heaven" which is more "space" than "time".      In a nutshell, the metaverse can be thought of as the “world of online games.” Everyone has their own virtual avatar. That avatar lives, meets other avatars, works and makes products inside the metaverse, and trades with other entities. In short, the metaverse is just like the real world, the only difference is that it is created with computers and exists on some tech companies' servers.
