Vietnamese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Sino-Vietnamese word from 運動員, composed of 運動 (sport) and (-person), Chinese 運動員运动员 (yùndòngyuán), with the Chinese "sport" sense of 運動运动 (yùndòng) that is not productive in Vietnamese. Compare Japanese 運動員 (undōin, campaign worker), which makes use of the "arousal; mobilization; campaign" sense of 運動 (undō) instead.
