Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From earlier vlade, from Middle Dutch vlade, from Old Dutch *flatho, *flatha, from Proto-Germanic *flaþô, *flaþōn (flat cake). The word vlaai derives from the same Middle Dutch word, but from the eastern Brabantian and Limburgish dialects where intervocalic -d- became -j- instead of disappearing like it did in the western dialects. More at flathe.
