From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wēˀtrāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂weh₁-. Cognate with Proto-Slavic *větrъ (Old Church Slavonic вѣтръ (větrŭ, wind)), Lithuanian vėtra (storm), Latvian vētra (storm).
