From Middle Dutch wouwe, wīwe, wīe, from Old Dutch [Term?], from Proto-West Germanic [Term?], from Proto-Germanic *wīwô, a derivate of Proto-Indo-European *weyh₁- (to hunt, pursue). Compare German Weihe, Low German Wieh, both “harrier”.
