Etymology

There are cognates in Tho lects, e.g. Cuối Thái Hoà Ɂiew³⁵ (Nguyễn Hữu Hoành et al., 2022), with the meaning of "beautiful, pretty".

Considering the semantics, the Vietnamese verb is probably an extension of the Sino-Vietnamese word from 妖, as seen in yêu kiều (“charming, graceful”).
