Inherited from Byzantine Greek γρήγορος, from Hellenistic Koine Greek ἐγρήγορος (awake), γρηγορῶ (grēgorô), from the present perfect of Ancient Greek ἐγείρω (egeírō, to awaken, rouse).[1]
