Etymology[edit]

Attested as Middle Bulgarian боубрегъ (bubregŭ), боубрѣгъ (bubrěgŭ) in late Church Slavonic texts. Either borrowed from Ottoman Turkish بوبرك (böbrek) or less likely of Oghur[1] origin, in view of the voiced reflex of proto-Turkic *-ek, which is even more common in Macedonian бубрег (bubreg), Serbo-Croatian бу̀брег, Slovene bȗbreg (dialectal).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): [ˈbɤbrɛk]
  • (file)
