[edit]From Persian میدان (meydân) or via Arabic مَيْدَان (maydān).
Cognate with Kazakh, Kyrgyz майдан (maydan), Tatar мәйдан (mäydan), Uzbek maydon, Azerbaijani, Turkish, Crimean Tatar meydan etc.
