Inherited from Old East Slavic обѣдати (obědati), from Proto-Slavic *obědati, from *obědъ +‎ *-ati, ultimately from *ěsti (to eat). By surface analysis, обе́д (obéd, dinner, lunch) +‎ -ать (-atʹ, infinitive suffix). See also объеда́ть (obʺjedátʹ).
