From Proto-Turkic *tïrŋa-k (fingernail, claw). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐱃𐰃𐰺𐰭𐰴 (tïrŋaq, fingernail), Turkish tırnak, Kyrgyz тырмак (tırmak).
