From Proto-Mongolic *gaxursun (stubble, chaff, shaft of a feather), see Mongolian гуурс (guurs, tube, quill).

Cognate with Kazakh қауырсын (qauyrsyn, feather), Kyrgyz куурсун (kuursun, stem of feather), and Yakut куорсун (kuorsun, feather).
