From Ancient Greek ἀνέκδοτος (anékdotos, accounts unpublished) (compare German Anekdote, French anecdote, English anecdote), from ἀν- (an-, not, un-) + ἔκδοτος (ékdotos, published), from ἐκδίδωμι (ekdídōmi, I publish), from ἐκ- (ek-, out) + δίδωμι (dídōmi, I give).
