Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܨܶܢܳܪܬܐ (ṣennārtā, fishing device, gaff; ritual crook; a curved-shape implement), from Middle Persian snwl (sanwar, bow), from Avestan 𐬚𐬀𐬥𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬭 (θanuuar, bow).
