Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Middle Persian pdʾm (padām). Also in Jewish Babylonian Aramaic פדאמא / פְּדָמָא (pəḏāmā). Ultimately from Akkadian 𒌋𒌆 (/⁠pasāmu⁠/, to veil).

فَدَام or فِدَام (fadām or fidāmm (plural فُدُم (fudum) or فُدُوم (fudūm))

  1. a thing bound upon the mouth of something so as to filter immissions
    1. a piece of cloth bound upon the mouths by Zoroastrians in sacral contexts, a mouth-veil used by Magians so as not to pollute the sacred flame by their breath
