Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Huktʰám, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Huktʰám, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ugʰ-tHó-m, from *h₁ewgʰ-, metathesis of *h₁wegʷʰ- (“to promise, vow”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬎𐬑𐬜𐬀 (uxδa, “word”).
