Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘕𑘰𑘜𑘜𑘹 (jāṇaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀚𑀸𑀡𑀇 (jāṇaï), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀚𑀸𑀦𑀢𑀺 (jānati), from Sanskrit जानाति (jānā́ti), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́ānáHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ānáHti, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵn̥néh₃ti (to know). Cognate with Konkani जाण्चे (jāṇce), Gujarati જાણવું (jāṇvũ), Hindi जानना (jānnā).
