From Latin Scandināvia, from Proto-Germanic *Skadinawjō (Scadia island) (compare Old English Scedenig, Old Norse Skáney 'southern tip of Sweden'), from *-aujo 'island' (compare Old English ī(e)g 'island', Old Norse ey 'island').
