Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Southwestern Tai *fuːŋᴬ¹ (flock; swarm; group; party). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨺᩪᨦ, Lao ຝູງ (fūng), ᦚᦳᧂ (ḟung), Shan ၽုင် (phǔng) or ၾုင် (fǔng), Ahom 𑜇𑜤𑜂𑜫 (phuṅ).

  • Rarely used of inanimate things.
  • Groups of elephants are called โขลง (klǒong).
  • Now, applying the term to other living things than non-human animals is somewhat archaic, and applying the term to human beings can be considered derogatory and offensive.
