Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *braːꟲ⁴ (sword; long knife). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨻᩕ᩶ᩣ or ᨽ᩶ᩣ, Khün ᨻᩕ᩶ᩣ or ᨽ᩶ᩣ, Lao ພ້າ (phā), ᦘᦱᧉ (phaa²), Shan ၽႃႉ (phâ̰a), Tai Nüa ᥚᥣᥳ (phȧa), Phake ၸႃ (phā), Ahom 𑜇𑜠 (pha).
