Compound of 昼 (hiru, “daytime; noon”) + 間 (ma, “space; period”).[1][2]

Usage notes[edit]
Synonymous with 昼 (hiru), お昼 (ohiru). The term 昼間 (hiruma) is used to more specifically indicate the daytime, as opposed to the synonyms' possible additional meanings of noon or noonday meal → lunch.
