Etymology[edit]

(geol-, to hang) + (-ri-, passive suffix) + (-da, suffix conventionally given for citation forms).

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 걸이〮다〮 (Yale: kèlGí-tá).
