Etymology

First attested in the Beonyeok nogeoldae (飜譯老乞大 / 번역노걸대), 1517, as Middle Korean 뎝시 (Yale: tyepsi), from Middle Mongol ᠲᠡᠪᠰᠢ (tebsi, “oblong tray”), itself from Middle Chinese 疊子 (MC dep tsiX, “small dish; plate”).

Initial syllable
The initial syllable may have shifted to 뎝 (Yale: tyep) under the influence of the now obsolete Sino-Korean synonym 뎝ᄌᆞ (Yale: tyepco, “dish”), from Middle Chinese 楪子 (MC yep tsiX). Compare Yukjin Korean 텹시 (tyeopsi, “dish”), which is closer to the Mongol aspirate /tʰ/.
