Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Hellenic *wóikos, from Proto-Indo-European *wóyḱos (“settlement, homestead, village”). Cognate with Ancient Greek οἶκος (oîkos, “house, home; household, family”), Latin vīcus (“village”), Sanskrit विश् (víś, “settlement, dwelling-place”), from the root *weyḱ- (“to settle; settlement, tribe”).
