Inherited from Vulgar Latin *sūbilāre, from Latin sībilāre, present active infinitive of sībilō, or possibly influenced by fluiera. Compare Aromanian shuir, shuirari, Dalmatian sublar, Italian sobillare, Romansch tschüblar, dialectal French subler.
