Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Middle French Egypte, from Old French Egypte, borrowed from Latin Aegyptus, from Ancient Greek Αἴγυπτος (Aíguptos).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /e.ʒipt/
  • (file)

Proper noun[edit]

Égypte f

  1. Egypt (a country in North Africa and Western Asia)

Usage notes[edit]

  • In older French practice, capital letters did not take diacritics, so É becomes E. This was mostly done because of technical constraints. Formal orthotypography maintains the diacritics.
