From Proto-Indo-Aryan *źʰr̥tás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰr̥tás, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰr̥-t-ós, from *ǵʰer- (to yearn for). Cognate with Ancient Greek χαρτός (khartós).
